Top Shelf International’s (TSI) award-winning NED Australian Whisky has taken inspiration from one of Ned Kelly’s earliest acts of bravery in the launch of their new reserve grade spirit – NED Green Sash Reserve Australian Whisky.

Aged just 10-years-old, Kelly saved a boy from drowning in a creek at the small village of Avenel in Victoria and was awarded a green sash by the boy’s parents which he wore with pride throughout his life. Such was the importance of the sash – that Kelly wore as a symbol of courage – he was found to be wearing it under his amour at his last stand in Glenrowan.

NED Green Sash Reserve Australian Whisky pays homage to Kelly’s character with the relentless quest to make better whisky and the courage to push the boundaries of traditional whisky production.

Premium barrels of NED Whisky – which was named the Australian Whisky of the Year at the Melbourne International Spirits Competition – were selected to rest longer and harvested over oak for additional sweetness. After harvest, multiple barrels were vatted together to rest in a dedicated NED Green Sash Solera at TSI’s Melbourne barrel house to allow the flavours to combine creating a complex and layered final spirit at a higher 44% ABV.

TSI Master Distiller Sebastian Reaburn said the starting position for the creation of any NED Whisky is innovation and experimentation.

“At NED Whisky we challenge all aspects of production – from mashing, fermenting and distilling, to maturation.  For this unique spirit we focused on the maturation process, originally trialled through our Wanted Series collection.” he said.

“On top of our extra oak harvesting, we used a variation on a traditional solera, letting us layer NED Green Sash whisky with ongoing batches of premium spirit.

“This allows the flavours to mingle and integrate while aging, creating a complex and consistent liquid that improves over time.

“The result is an exceptional spirit with tastes of caramel, vanilla and dark chocolate and a long finish of sweet oak and orange, making NED Green Sash a truly extraordinary whisky.”
